Statement of Purpose

We, the Reconciling United Methodists of the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference, in order to embody "open hearts, open minds, open doors" will:

• encourage churches and ministries to become more inclusive in their day-to-day life, language, witness, and teaching;
  
• provide resources and support to local churches and ministries to help them discuss, develop, and publish statements that proclaim their welcome to all persons, specifically every race, nationality, age, gender, social condition, ability, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, previous faith experience, and questioners; and
  
• state clearly that "we are not leaving" the United Methodist Church and that we will find ways to promote unity.

OI RUMs Purple Ribbon

We were pleased to offer this purple ribbon initially at the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference session in Salem, Oregon, June, 2005. If you were there, you may have worn one. If not, they are still available. The ribbon is quite attractive -- smooth, bright "grape" purple ribbon with gold lettering that reads "I was pastored by gay clergy"; the RMN logo; and "Reconciling United Methodists."

The ribbon is in support of gay clergy everywhere -- some of whom serve in silence, some of whom are able to be open and fully themselves. One or more may have crossed your path -- in your church, in another church, in your education, in your community, in your family.

To obtain a ribbon (or several), send a self-addressed envelope to Deborah Maria at the address below. (Deborah will add the stamp.) We will appreciate your donation of $1 per ribbon -- more if you care to support the work of the Oregon-Idaho RUMs, less if your finances are tight. Wear your ribbon with pride!
